Flying While Armed
Enrollment in this course is restricted to sworn law enforcement officers only. In addition to being a sworn law enforcement officer you must also exhibit a need for this course, i.e you will be transferring a prisoner or have a specific need to be armed immediately upon exiting the aircraft.
Please Note: Employment information must be verified during enrollment process. Enrollment to receiving your completion certificate is a process that could take up to 1 week to complete, faster completion is possible depending on instructor availability at the time of enrollment. If you have an expedited need, please contact us.
If you need to take your gun along on a scheduled airline, it is safe only when it is under your control. That means in your possession. If you are transporting a prisoner, you certainly aren't expected to do it unarmed, but before flying you must complete a Flying While Armed course. In 1995, the Federal Aviation Administration required a training course of all police officers who must fly while armed. There were no instructors qualified by FAA to teach it. OPA was conceived to provide such training expeditiously. FAA Rule 108 became law on 14 November 2001. The course now is covered by TSA Rule 1544.219 which replaced FAA Rule 108 in 2009. The course has also been updated to include rule changes made since the atrocity of Sept. 11, 2001.
Prior to flying officers must submit their request via the Nlets system and receive the unique identifier code amoung other requirements.
